Domiciling an import-export company: what is possible and what is not

An import-export company can domicile its registered office, but everything depends on what it physically does with the goods. Export and services linked to international trade are usually domiciled without trouble; wholesale requires premises (a warehouse or shop); import for resale depends on storage and customs requirements, and a domiciliation address is never a warehouse. Neuron Cowork checks your activity code free of charge before anything is signed; if domiciliation fits, it costs 6,000 DA a month in Dely Brahim, Algiers.

Two meanings of "domiciliation" in import-export

In foreign trade, the same word refers to two different things. Mixing them up is a common mistake.

Commercial domiciliationBank domiciliation
What it isThe company's registered office addressRegistering an import or export operation with a bank
Who handles itA domiciliation centre, before a notaryYour bank
FrameworkCommercial Code and the CNRC fileBank of Algeria regulations
WhenOnce, at creation or when the office movesFor each operation concerned

This page covers commercial domiciliation: where to set up your import-export company's registered office. Bank domiciliation is handled afterwards with your bank, operation by operation.

What the law requires for the registered office

To register the company, the CNRC (National Trade Register Centre) asks for a title deed or a notarised lease in the company's name. A notarised domiciliation contract is one of the accepted proofs of office. For import-export, then, the question is where the goods arrive and are stored.

Export, trading, import: who can be domiciled

ActivityDomiciled officeWhy

Services linked to international trade (consulting, brokerage, studies)Generally yesThese are service activities

Retail of imported goodsPremises requiredSelling to consumers needs a shop

When premises or a warehouse are required

As soon as your company receives, stores or resells goods, it needs a suitable physical place. A domiciliation address serves as an administrative address and the place where your mail arrives. It cannot be used as a warehouse, a shop or a loading bay.

Importing goods for resale as is also follows specific conditions set by foreign trade regulations. These conditions have changed several times in recent years, and depending on the activity and the products, the authorities or customs may ask you to prove a storage site. Some products also need sector-specific authorisations and compliant premises.

What domiciliation brings when it is possible

  • A registered office address in Dely Brahim, west Algiers, for the articles, the trade register, invoices and contracts with foreign partners.
  • A place where official mail arrives (tax authority, bank, public bodies): at Neuron, it is received and you are notified when it arrives.
  • A meeting room at 5,000 DA a day to receive suppliers and clients.
  • Limited fixed costs while you launch your first operations: 6,000 DA a month.

The cost

If your activity can be domiciled: 6,000 DA a month at Neuron Cowork, that is 72,000 DA for a year or 144,000 DA for two years. If a warehouse is required, this cost comes on top of the storage site, or disappears if you set up your office at the warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

Can an import-export company be domiciled?

The registered office, often yes. It all depends on the actual activity: export and services are usually domiciled, import for resale depends on storage and customs requirements. Wholesale requires premises (a warehouse or shop).

Do I need a warehouse to import?

If you receive and resell goods, you do need a place to store them, and depending on the activity the authorities may ask you to prove it. Check with the CNRC and the trade directorate of your wilaya for your activity code.

Does exporting require premises?

Generally not: exporting does not require premises open to the public. The goods can ship from the producer's or the supplier's site.

What is the difference between commercial and bank domiciliation?

The first is your company's registered office address. The second is the registration of your import or export operations with your bank, under Bank of Algeria rules.

Can I have a domiciled office and a warehouse elsewhere?

Ask the CNRC branch in your wilaya: it will tell you how the storage site must be proven for your activity. Do this before signing a domiciliation contract or a lease.

Can Neuron tell me whether my activity can be domiciled?

Yes. Send your activity code on WhatsApp: we answer free of charge before anything is signed, and tell you plainly if premises are needed.
